When you look at your budget for spending for your family take the time to look at the skill set of of your family.
Are you investing in skills that will be useful in the future?
How about things that can result in an income source such as piano or skiing?
Going to a restaurant is not going to make. Your kids a chef, but taking cooking classes may.
What about travel? Does your plans include international experience? Is that a good excuse to have your kids study a foreign language in advance of the trip?
Invest in skills that will help your kids succeed in the future.
